Articles and stories about aging naturally catch my eye after more than 20 years working in gerontology. What strikes me most are the headlines that encourage us to find new ways to “fight” aging.
I understand that many people yearn to look younger than their age – especially in their 30s or 40s. What I find hard to swallow is the perpetuation of ageism and myths about aging.
Rather than “fighting” it, I would encourage people my age and older to embrace aging. Learn to appreciate the life lessons we have accumulated by the time we reach our 40s and 50s. I, for one, do not wish to repeat those lessons but rather choose to value the wisdom gained from the experiences. Read the rest of this entry »
